Trend Debate: Bathtub or No Bathtub?
There is a trend right now of doing away with bathtubs. Some new buildings are being built without a tub in the bathroom to maximize space. In many ways, this makes sense. One recent study found that more half of the respondents say they never soak in their bathtub.
But the question/answer article from the New York Times raises some important points such as: What if you sprain your ankle and need an Epsom salt soak?
You might stay in your house for many years so the tub/no tub issue is yours alone. But, if you want to sell your home and it only has a shower, it might reduce the appeal to parents with young children or people planning to have children and need a tub to bathe the baby.
For practical reasons, you might want to leave one bathtub in your home even if every other bathroom in the house only has a shower. One space-saving solution is to use the traditional, standard shower/tub combination. Just put very modern glass doors on it or give it a super cool shower curtain treatment.
What a tub manufacturer needs to come up with is a shower stall that has a cool, decorative base that can be used as a mini-tub if you need a little water to soak your ankle or give the baby a bath.
